Argh, Argh. Fix my tools!

Tomorrow is a great day! I know Spring is imminent, because tomorrow morning when I roll out for work, I’ll be in my pickup truck. In the back of the truck will be a load of power equipment. My tiller, my backpack blower, my chainsaw and a string trimmer. All of these machines are gas powered. Who would buy an electric power tool? They’re not worth blowing up. I like the noise and power of a gasoline power tool.

I’m taking these tools on a little field trip to Best Nursery and Landscaping for a little TLC. They’re going to a tool spa. It will be hot there, I’m pretty sure. They’ll be greased up and pampered. I’m sure they’ll come out of there running like bats out of hell. There’s some south Russell County, Alabama weeds and errant limbs that I intend to turn into a big load of something that Jill will probably fight me to burn. God, I love to watch that woman when there’s a pile of brush and she’s got a jug of diesel fuel and a match.

I wear long sleeved shirts and long pants when I bust out my string trimmer. Even if it is 150 degrees out there, I wear the longs. If I didn’t think I’d pass out, I’d probably wrap myself in plastic when I’m outside working. Poison ivy is my nemesis and I don’t like to give it access to my skin. I wonder if Pam would work? I could go short sleeved and spray my exposed skin with Pam. I might try that. If I do, I’ll let you know how it works.

I’m so nervous about getting poison ivy early in the season that I really would try anything that I think will keep it at bay. If I get the rash, I’ll have it for weeks. I just can’t stand the itch. If Pam works, I’m down for using it. I’m ready to get my garden in the ground. It won’t be long.

Garden Update

I didn’t get the ground broken up and ready to plant, but I’m well on my way. I couldn’t get the tiller cranked, so I’m taking it in for service on Monday. I’m sure the good folks at Best Nursery won’t take long to get it serviced and I’ll back in business. I got the drip irrigation system broken down and ready to reinstall. That part went well. I also get most of the scrubby stuff burned off  and all the big stuff pulled out of the ground.  I’ve knocked the vines off the rabbit fence and have decided to pull new wire on the electric deer fence. I didn’t install the tensioners correctly when I ran the wire last year and so I’m going to re-do it this season.

The actually tilling of the ground won’t take too long, so I should have it done in time to plant by the first weekend in April. I’m so glad to get most of this behind me! The sheer manual labor part of it was not something I was looking forward to, but now that most of the hard stuff is behind me I’m feeling pretty good. I had a bitch of a time last year keeping the weeds down, so I’m going to try covering everything that doesn’t have a plant sticking out of it with sheets of newspaper. I’ll keep adding sheets until I have all the weeks choked out. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I’m not sure what I’ll plant this year, but I’m looking forward to going to Capps and picking up some plants and seeds. I’m looking forward to seeing something green popping out of the ground. The garden is soon to be a reality!
