Every once in a while over the last few months I have wondered what this blog post would be like and hoped like hell I’d never need to write it. I tried to put myself in the mental place I’d surely have to visit to write these words. There is a raw memory taped to that place in my mind — that place I’d need to stand near to set off the gut shot that comes right after all the air is sucked out of the room. I can hear Dr. Mike Lake say, “Mike, this is cancer. I’m 90 percent sure of it.”
I couldn’t see the look in Dr. Lake’s eyes as he told me the news he’d likely shared with dozens, if not hundreds of people during his long, successful career as a urologist. So, I heard I had cancer the first time. Jill was sitting on my lap in my office with the door shut as those words made their way from the speakerphone to our ears. I asked questions. Jill asked questions. At least I think we did. All the things that happened next get fuzzier as I try to recall them.
Trips to Emory, needle sticks, MRI machines, shuttle rides, restless lunches, waiting rooms, insurance forms, tearful hugs, more needle sticks, quiet dinners, work, silent car rides back home, talks with our sons and parents, difficult yet hopeful in every way a situation like ours could be hopeful. Sure of the outcome. Positive that we’d get past this and carry on.
On Monday, I saw that I had cancer……..again.
By all rights, Monday’s appointment with Dr. Andy Pippas was routine. Matt Scherer, the personable, University of Alabama football fan who rocks a completely shaved head and skillfully runs the John B. Amos Cancer, walked by us as we sat and waited to see Dr. Pippas. “This is just a regular follow up, right?” he asked. “Oh sure,” I said. “This is the visit we had to schedule to meet the requirements of the clinical trial we just completed.” Matt’s had enough experience to know that any of the people he walks by in any waiting room at the center may be in that chair because they’ve been summoned back to their oncologist to begin yet another battle with a disease that you’d better not ignore.
We were called and I walked into the treatment room and offloaded my Blackberry, my Kindle, my iPod, sunglasses and reading glasses on the counter next to where my 3-inch thick chart would soon be opened by Dr. Pippas. I was holding Jill’s hand when he walked in. I stood to shake his hand and sat back down. I knew something was different.
He scooted across the short distance and took my free right hand and looked me in the eye. Over his shoulder were my clinical research coordinator, Dona Ferguson and a young woman whom we had agreed could sit in on our visit with Dr. Pippas. She is on the verge of finishing her schooling to become a physician and was shadowing Dona on Monday, October 11, 2011. I don’t think she will forget this office visit.
“Your CT scan is troublesome. You have a spot on your spine at L-2 and I’m very concerned about it,” he said. “Mike, I want you to internalize this. You are not going to die from this any time soon. Do you hear me? You are not going to die from this any. Time. Soon. What we need to do…”
i have got to finish the potting bench ive been working on for jill how many months have i been working on that project man that thing is heavy must have 1o pounds of screws in it i wonder where shell want to keep it it could stay outside because it will be caulked and sealed with the right kind of finish i feel so good about my life right now mike if i havent told you lately youre a good man you are fiercely faithful to jill you tell everyone how much she means to you how much you love her how well she takes care of you when youre sad or sick youve been just what christopher and nicholas needed when their father got sick and died and youve gotten way more than youve given from the fact theyve accepted your fatherly love and given you a place to give that love when michael and adam werent close enough to touch you are a good friend to your friends and generous giver of your time to your causes and a devout, although foulmouthed follower of your god there is not a single reason that youve earned what that good doctor is telling you right
“….now is to get this spot biopsied and do a bone scan and decide what we’re going to do next. It could very well be osteoporosis or arthritis,” Dr. Pippas said. He leveled a look at me as we walked away from him down the hall and said, “Mike, I am very concerned about this.” Although we don’t have the pathology report in hand, he knew and we know.
My cancer is back.
Maridonna says
I am praying for you and your beloved family. I am sorry.

I was holding my breath as I read this, Mike. Your story stirred many feelings and took me through a myriad of emotions such as the sad, sinking feeling of despair, anger, fear, even contentment and happiness until one single feeling remained… HOPEFULNESS. You may be a “foulmouthed follower of God,” but a believer and follower none the less. Never forget that GOD IS ABLE!! I am praying for a complete healing and restoration within your spirit and your physical being. God Bless You and Keep You as you begin this journey.

Hey Mike and Jill-
wierd how small the world is… Twenty-five years ago we all worked together, 25 years later I worked with your son at the AJC. For the last 2 days I have spent time with your son in a seminar – which is the only reason I am reading this now.. Because of this my sweet friend Jill and Mike , you will be in my prayers daily.. God is good! There’s a special word that me and my girls share ….BELIEVE… My word to you two!!!
Angie Ennis Allen

Darling Mike !
I am so sorry to read this … When we saw you at Houlihans last November, I didn’t know…..NOW, I certainly don’t want to read this…..I know of no two people who are more loved and admired than you & Jill…..
Mike, we have a POWERFUL prayer group in Hurtsboro. After you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, please consider allowing some of us to pray with you ( here or there). In the meantime, know that we are praying fervently…….
AND that we pray with faith, knowing that our God Almighty can & will heal you…
Jill, hang tough !!
Mark Venable says
Mike, I was saddened to hear late today what the biopsy revealed. Yes, the battle does rage, but the enemy has not won the war.
Please know that your relatives here in Florida are closely following this, and are fervently praying for you. I hope to talk to you and/or your mother in the next day or two. Mike, there are some wonderful possibilities out there with respect to what others, even those with “incurable” illnesses have done to solve the problem. Your doctor said that he is “very concerned about this.” I am too. I’ve known and loved you a lot longer than your doctor has. Yes, the battle does rage. I will pray that the victory will still be yours. in Him, Mark
Roger Ashley says

We love you and Jill greatly and we are willing and ready to do anything if we can be of help to you.

DURWOOD FINCHER says
HEY MAN. I JUST GOT WORD. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS GET READY. YOU HAVE FACED THIS DEMON BEFORE
AND NOW IT LOOKS LIKE YOU WILL ONCE AGAIN. BUT NOT ALONE. IT IS EASY FOR US TO TELL YOU ON PAPER
TO KEEP YOUR SPIRITS UP AND HANG IN THERE ETC. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT HAS TO BE DONE. NOW DO IT. YOU
HAVE THE MOST INCREDIBLE BASE OF FRIENDS WHO ARE SO PULLING FOR YOU. YOU HAVE THE BENEFIT OF EARLY
DETECTION AND YOU HAVE THE BEST MEDICAL TEAM AVAILABLE. THAT IS A BIG PLUS IN THIS SCENARIO. BUT
ABOVE ALL MIKE, YOU HAVE YOU. YOUR DOGGED DETERMINATION AND SPIRIT WILL ONCE AGAIN BE TESTED. AS
IN ALL CASES LIKE THIS, IT IS INCUMBENT TO STAY FOCUSED. I AM AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN A BIG BELIEVER.
I KNOW YOU REALIZE THE CHALLENGES, BUT ALSO KNOW THAT THE BELIEF SYSTEM YOU ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE IS VERY
REAL. ALWAYS HAS BEEN…ALWAYS WILL BE. THERE IS A LINE A SWEET 80 YEAR YOUNG SAINT TOLD ME NOT LONG
AGO AND I WILL CLOSE WITH IT: “I HAVE REACHED ROCK BOTTOM, AND IT’S SOLID!!! I LOVE THAT FOR EVERYTHING
IT STANDS FOR. YOU ARE AT THE TOP OF MY PRAYER LIST—AGAIN, STAY YOU!
Patti Montgomery says

Mike,
It very well could be arthritis! Don’t lose faith. I just finished my one year and have remained clean (the doctor’s say they cure this cancer ALL the time). I am reducing my visits to every 6 months and although I am scared to death before each one, I know in my heart that the doctors got that cancer, all of that cancer. Positive thoughts are very powerful!!!!!!!!!! Stay positive.
Jackie Titus says
I am so sad to hear this news. I was crying by the time I got to the end of what you wrote. What can Tom and I do for you all? Please let us know. I will be holding you in light. Jackie

Please know that we truly care about you, that we are with you;and most of all, we are praying for you and your family and are sure that God will never forsake you.
Wendy $ Tommy Mc says
Dear Mike and Jill, once again it is time for the Prayer Warriors to Sing. I am reminded of King Johoshaphat who was in fear of armies that were coming to do battle and take over his land. A King who was scared, A King who was afraid, a King who didn’t know what to do until he prayed to God. Jehoshaphat asked God to help him. God sent a message to Jehoshaphat, “Don’t be afraid, This is not your battle. This is God’s battle. He will save you”. Jehoshaphat’s army went to meet their enemies and in front of them marched some singers who sang to God. A surprising thing happened, the enemies started to fight each other instead of fighting against the army of Judah. God had answered Jehoshaphat’s prayer …. and he will answer yours too. Just remember to sing praises to him above. We love you and hand continued to prayer for you and your healing. Tommy and Wendy Mc

Sorry you have to do this again…but you CAN do this again with good results. Keep your head about you and a prayer in your heart. I will certainly have a prayer for you each day.
Nonie says
Your words are incredible and descriptive of this “thing”,this “place” you find yourself and don’t want to be – and we don’t want you there either. There are no words I can say really, but I do believe in miracles, God’s faithfulness, the power of prayer and also technological advances happening every day, every minute. You have incredible strength, family and friends. It may sound completely bizarre, but I pray for you much joy and much much laughter every day – I find it helps, too.
Debbie Seeley says
Mike,
As they say, God never gives you more than you can handle. And you can handle this. Your friends, relatives and the ACS support system is vast. THIS is why we raise the money to fund the research. We’re ALL with you, Jill and your family every step of the way!!! Praying for you……..

Being the optimist that I know you are, I know you will look at this as another opportunity to beat the s— out of this %@#!+r X^#!#r again! I love you and Jill so much (probably Jill a little bit more!) amd pray for the best. You know, maybe a swallow of the barbecue sauce that we won a ribbon in the Pig Gig several years ago might help. I believe it will cure anything!
Love ya’ll!
